Student Leadership
Our Student Leadership team are a vital part of our day-to-day life here at Goldthorpe: we want our pupils to leave Goldthorpe as courageous, kind and respectful citizens whose opinions are valued and acted upon. Here, our School Parliament enables our students to have the confidence to voice their ideas, to introduce new initiatives and to take responsibility for decisions that are made to enhance our Academy.
Head Boy and Head Girl
The top layer of our School Parliament consists of our Head Boy and Head Girl.
All children in Years 5 and 6 are invited to apply for this exciting role, which involves public speaking, making decisions, implementing systems and displaying our school values of Courage, Kindness and Respect in a way that influences all other pupils in school.
Once the applications have been shortlisted by our staff team, the candidates deliver a speech to the whole school, outlining their suggestions for school why they are the ideal applicant.
They are then democratically voted for by all pupils and our new Head Boy and Girl team take up their role!
School Councillors
Our School councillors are elected by way of application, shortlisting and selection.
We have a variety of councillors who work closely with staff to implement change, vocalise student opinions and form part of a decision making team when it comes to the academy.
Our councillors consist of:
- Health and Wellbeing Councillors
- Sustainability Councillors
- Finance Councillors
- Environment Councillors
- Community Councillors
London 2024
In July 2024, our School Parliament visited our capital city of London to take part in a tour of the Houses of Parliament! They put into practice their understanding of democracy and the roles and responsibilities of an MP whilst in discussion with our guide, who was able to impart even further knowledge of how this looks on a day to day basis in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. They also ran into our local MP, Stephanie Peacock, who answered their burning questions such as, “What do you want to do for Barnsley?”. We then went on to explore London and it’s famous landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and Downing Street.
